With profound respect and quiet reverence, we mark the passing of Margaret Elizabeth Stevens, who departed this life on August 19, 2026, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, at the age of 84. Born on September 30, 1941, in the storied town of Pawnee, Oklahoma, Margaret’s life journey was shaped by the steadfastness and dignity of her early years, forming a legacy that will echo in the hearts of those who knew her best.
Margaret’s story began in a close-knit family, daughter to Alfred Ellis and Minnie Gibson, whose values shaped the gentle spirit and enduring character she displayed throughout her life. As she grew, Margaret moved through the joys and trials of familial life alongside her loving sister, Sarah Franklin, and her five brothers, each now departed but remembered fondly. The gathering of siblings undoubtedly lent Margaret a sense of resilience and a devotion to kin that would become the foundation of her own life.
Her days in Pawnee were marked by the rhythms of ordinary wonder-days that quietly blossomed into years of compassionate relationships and meaningful moments. In time, Margaret became a devoted mother, guiding her beloved children Celena Alexander, Vincent Ellis, Steve Ellis and Stewart Stevens, adopted children Dorothy G., Connie R., Mary E. and Shawna O., with wisdom drawn from a lifetime of love and perseverance. Margaret’s familial circle extended thoughtfully to her close 13 grandchildren, Greg, Sam, Chris, Jennifer, Waylon, Josh, Sonny, Felica, Rose, Kaulin, Vincent Jr., Erica, and Alex. As well as 24 great-grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and adopted grandson Tommi C.
As Margaret traversed the seasons of life, she cherished deeply her cherished grandson, Isaiah Stevens, whose memory joins the constellation of lights now guiding the family onward. Each relationship, each affectionate conversation, added a stroke to the vibrant portrait that is Margaret’s legacy.
Though much of her personal history may remain unwritten to the world, those closest to Margaret know that her presence was a source of calm, strength, and unyielding care. She moved through life with humility and quiet resolve, laying down roots in Oklahoma and upholding the values impressed upon her in youth. Her legacy endures in the dignity she brought to everyday interactions, and in the love she extended without measure.
Margaret now joins her dearly missed parents, Alfred and Minnie; her sister, Sarah; her beloved grandson Isaiah; and her five brothers, whose collective memory forms the rich fabric of her heritage. Left to mourn and honor her memory are her devoted daughter, Celina Alexander, and her loving nieces and nephews. Their grief is softened by the remembrance of Margaret’s warmth, always opening her home to those who needed a place to stay, and by the powerful example she set through every act of grace and resilience. Her proudest accomplishments were in 2001-2002, being named Sac & Fox’s Senior Woman of the year and in 2020, she was named mother of the year. She was also an avid member of the Sac & Fox Nation Elders Advisory Committee.
The memory of Margaret Elizabeth Stevens will live on in the hearts of those who knew her gentle laughter, her softness in times of sorrow, and her steadfast companionship in moments of joy. In bidding farewell, we hold close the assurance that her legacy endures-quiet, strong, and luminous.
Rest peacefully, Margaret. Your journey has been long and your love abides still.
