Janet Marie Barnard

Janet Barnard, age 88, of Shawnee, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, October 19, 2026, in Shawnee. She was born on August 22, 1938, in Shawnee, to Ulis Elbert and Mildred Monroe Clem.

Janet attended Wilson Elementary School and graduated from Shawnee High School. She continued her education at Oklahoma Baptist University, earning a bachelor's degree in business education. She later earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Oklahoma before returning to Oklahoma Baptist University to complete a second bachelor's degree in accounting.

Education was a lifelong passion for Janet, both as a student and as a teacher. Throughout her career, she taught at Macomb, Seminole Junior College, Oklahoma Baptist University, and in Shawnee. Her subjects included general business, typing, economics, and microeconomics. She devoted 22 years of her teaching career to Shawnee, sharing her knowledge and experience with generations of students before retiring in the early 2000s.

Retirement certainly did not mean slowing down for Janet. She remained active in her community and enjoyed a full schedule of activities and fellowship. She was involved with the Rotary Club, Lifelong Learners, Retired Educators, and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. These organizations and the friendships she enjoyed through them became an important part of her weekly routine. Janet valued staying engaged, continuing to learn, and maintaining the relationships she had developed throughout her life. At home, Janet found special companionship in her beloved cats William, Little Girl, and Sam. Each held a special place in her heart and brought her much enjoyment over the years. Janet's life was marked by a dedication to education, an active involvement in her community, and an enduring appreciation for learning and the companionship of others.

Viewing will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Riley-Walker Funeral Service & Crematory. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Riley-Walker Funeral Service & Crematory. Following the ceremony, Janet will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Bob, at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee.

Memorial donations in Janet's honor may be made to the Pottawatomie County Historical Society or Oklahoma Baptist University.
